What makes a ‘good life’?

For humanists, a good life isn’t about following a fixed set of rules, but about learning how to live well — using reason, kindness, and courage to shape a life that feels worthwhile and connected.

For most of us, this includes:

  • Caring about others, and building strong relationships and communities

  • Using our minds well — staying curious, learning, and thinking for ourselves

  • Doing something worthwhile, through work, creativity, or helping others

  • Taking pleasure in life, from nature and music to humour and friendship

  • Being ourselves, while respecting the dignity of others

  • Finding balance between personal freedom and responsibility to others

There’s no single formula for a good life. But many humanists share a simple starting point: this life is short and precious, so it matters how we live it — both for ourselves and for those around us.

At Dorset Humanists, we explore these questions together, through conversation, shared experiences, and time spent in good company.
